Fall Skincare Routine: Expectations vs. Reality

Fall Skincare Routine: Expectations vs. Reality

It’s fair to say that autumn has arrived. The leaves are turning, the nights are cooling, and we’re starting to layer up on our clothing. While we transition from warm summer days to blustery, moisture-zapping cold weather, it’s an excellent time to examine our fall skincare routines.

Summer’s ultra-light, minimal textures won’t quite cut it for fall and winter. But besides swapping your light lotion for a richer cream, what other changes might you need to make this autumn? We revisit fall skincare expectations below and reveal the reality so that you can have healthy, glowing skin all season long.

Expectation: Say Goodbye To Summer Congestion

Does anyone else break out in the summer? While we’re spending extra time outdoors, our skin collects dirt, oil, sunscreen, and other impurities. When we partake in outdoor activities like walking, cycling, and other sports, our pores open up and those impurities can enter and create skin congestion. The result? Excess oiliness, blackheads, and other types of acne.

Now that summer’s over, those breakouts should dissipate, right?

Reality: Buildup Can Accumulate In The Fall & Winter

Not always. Although we spend more time indoors in the fall and winter, our skin is prone to a different kind of congestion. The cooler temperatures and harsher elements dehydrate our skin and can manifest in a sluggish, dull appearance.

Fall skincare solution: Continue to exfoliate your skin on a regular basis. Using a bio-based chemical peel like the LASPA Glycolic Peel 10% Overnight Treatment Kit will help to remove buildup throughout the cooler months and leave your complexion looking bright and fresh.

Expectation: We Can Put The Sunscreen Away

As the warm weather comes to an end, we probably won’t be seeing the beach anytime soon. We’ll be cocooning inside this autumn and there won’t be a need to apply sunscreen, right?

Reality: Sun Protection Is Necessary All Year

Wrong. One of the most common misconceptions about sun protection is that we don’t need to be using it on rainy, cool, or overcast days.

In our interview with dermatologist Dr. Julia Carroll, she said that we should be applying an ounce (or about the size of a shot glass) of sunscreen every single day, even in the cold months. We should also be reapplying during the day, especially if we are near a window or go for a walk.

Fall skincare solution: Apply a mineral-based, broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning before you begin your day. Our most-loved SPF 30 Mineral Moisturizing Sunscreen provides invisible protection for all skin types (even sensitive skin!). Alternatively, we also offer an SPF 20 Tinted Matte Sunscreen for a sheer wash of mineral-based protection with all-over colour to match your skin tone.

Expectation: Keep Using Purifying Cleansers

You may have gotten into the habit of using a purifying cleanser in the summer to remove all of your sunscreen, sweat, and dirt at night. This deep cleansing can be beneficial for summer acne and congestion. Continuing to use a purifying cleanser should keep your skin clear and healthy, right?

Reality: You Might Require Gentle Cleansing

Not necessarily. While deep cleansing can be beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin types, it can create dry, tight skin for others. Since the moisture-zapping elements of the fall and winter can dehydrate skin, using a harsh cleanser on top of that can be a recipe for disaster.

Many people require a gentle cleanser for sensitive skin during the cooler months.

Fall skincare solution: Swap your purifying cleanser for a gentle foaming cleanser for the fall and winter seasons. Instead of clarifying surfactants, our LASPA Gentle Facial Cleanser uses aloe vera, glycerin, and witch hazel to gently remove impurities from the skin. It’s a fragrance-free formula developed specifically for sensitive skin.

When it comes to fall and winter skincare, we believe in taking extra care of our skin to promote barrier health, hydration, and overall glow. Here are some of our other top tips for a fall skincare routine:

Make sure you are wearing your sunscreen daily regardless of the weather.

  • Opt for a richer, more nourishing face moisturizer (LASPA has a moisturizing mineral sunscreen in SPF20 or SPF30)
  • Use an eye cream and lip balm to prevent dryness in delicate areas
  • Live in a dry climate? Try using a humidifier to add moisture back into the air
  • Ensure you’re staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • Eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables to stock up on nourishing vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. This will help you glow from the inside out!
