How To Update Your Skincare Routine For Fall
As the weather begins to cool, we exchange our summer blouses for cozy, warm sweaters and our sandals for snug boots. We expect the weather change to affect our wardrobe, outdoor activities, and even our hair colour, but what about our skincare routines? We know to treat our skin to a gentle facial cleanser that soothes and hydrates, but what other additions are necessary for healthy, fall skin?
If you don’t know where to start, that’s okay. We’re here to guide you through this transition. Let’s get you on track to have hydrated, comforted skin this autumn.
Choose a Gentle Facial Cleanser
Selecting a gentle facial cleanser is the first step to healthy, moisturized skin this season.
In the summer, we deep clean our skin to get rid of all of the sweat and dirt from outside. When the weather changes, it’s important to take a step back and soothe skin that will be starting to dry with cool weather.
You’ll want to add a gentle facial cleanser that softly cleanses the skin but does not strip it of its natural oils. Our Foaming Facial Cleanser features calming ingredients such as hydrating Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, nourishing Glycerin, and balancing Witch Hazel. These ingredients work together to gently cleanse while adding back hydration and soothing properties to the skin.
Upgrade Your Moisturizer
It’s no secret that the cold weather brings drier skin conditions. The cool air, harsh winds, and lack of humidity make our skin prone to dryness and irritation. Due to this drastic change, many people require a moisturizer change in the fall.
This season, you may want to switch your moisturizer to a richer, more hydrating texture. Selecting a face cream that contains nourishing oils like jojoba and coconut is a good place to start.
A facial oil is also a great option for dry skin; try massaging in a light layer overnight to keep your skin feeling supple and comforted.
Create an Exfoliation Routine
Each year, our cells turn over at a slower rate; this results in our skin looking less fresh and bright. However, there is one thing that we can do to help our skin increase its cell turnover: regular exfoliation.
Natural plant acids, like the AHA or Alpha-Hydroxy Acid in our Intensive Glycolic Peel, work to gently remove old skin cells to reveal brighter, newer skin underneath. Begin with your gentle facial cleanser and then follow with this peel overnight to take advantage of skin renewal that occurs naturally while you’re sleeping.
In addition to brightening, using a Glycolic Peel can assist with skin conditions like hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, active breakouts, and enlarged pores. It’s an all-in-one for keeping your skin looking even, balanced, and glowing.
Elevate Your Lip Care
Although you may apply lip balm in the summer, it’s a good idea to start a lip care routine for the fall and winter months. Swap your light lip balm for richer lip butter and start scrubbing your lips weekly. We love creating our own all-natural lip scrub at home. Here’s our favourite recipe:
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 drop spearmint essential oil (optional)
Mix all of the ingredients in a small bowl together and apply as needed. This recipe will keep in the fridge for up to one week. Repeat weekly and feel free to switch up your essential oil choices for different flavours. Some of our other favourites are lemon, grapefruit, and sweet orange.
Don’t Forget Sunscreen
We always remember sunscreen in the hot summer months, but sunscreen use is important in the fall and winter. It is the number one step you can take to prevent signs of aging and to protect your skin against the effects of the sun’s harmful rays.
We recommend using an effective yet soothing sunscreen such as our SPF 30 Moisturizing Mineral Sunscreen. It is developed specifically for sensitive skin and contains skin-loving ingredients like soothing Zinc Oxide, nourishing Avocado Oil, and energizing Green Tea Extract. Don’t worry about washing it off, either! It can easily be removed with our gentle facial cleanser.
Whether you are someone who enjoys a 12-step routine or a cleanse-and-go method, adding a couple of easy steps to your fall skincare routine can keep your skin feeling hydrated and protected all season long.
